top.pngMore than One Way...

There are a number of sites that offer social bookmarking tools and services.
For the purpose of this workshop, we’ll focus on www.delicious.com, one of the original and most popular bookmarking services.
There are many others...
blinklist.jpg Blink List – social bookmarking with thumbnail images
digg.jpg Digg – bookmark, share and vote sites up or down
fleck.jpgFleck – includes ‘sticky notes’
flock.jpgFlock – a web browser with integrated social bookmarking
furl.jpgFurl – much like Delicious
jeteye.jpgJeteye – save or share your best web searches
stumbleupon.jpgStumble Upon – emphasis on collaborative discovery, sharing and rating

For a web browser, we’ll use firefox.jpgFirefox, a versatile & free browser that integrates well with Delicious. It allows you to add useful Delicious toolbar buttons right into Firefox. You'll be asked if you want to do that while registering for Delicious, but you can also add the toolbar buttons later.
If you are a dedicated safari.jpg Safari user, you can try the delicioussafari.jpg Delicious Safari add-on, which as of version 1.7, includes a toolbar button. Note: It has a $10 shareware fee to remove an occasional reminder, and is not as full featured as the Firefox extension.

top.pngA Delicious Start...

  1. Go to www.delicious.com
  2. In the upper right corner, click “Join Now”

top.pngTags are the Key(words)...

Conventional bookmarks are organized hierarchically using folders. If a bookmark fits two categories, you have to bookmark it twice or try to remember which folder you put it in.
In contrast, you organize Delicious bookmarks with tags – descriptive words you choose.
  • Assign as many tags as you like.
  • Create new tags on the fly.
  • Use tags to search for & retrieve bookmarks.
  • Combine tags to refine searches, e.g. biology + lessonplans, versus biology + reference.

top.pngImport Bookmarks...

importbookmarks.jpgTo upload existing bookmarks from your browser to del.icio.us, use import/upload in your settings to add them to your account.
Upload as many bookmarks files as you like, one at a time, to consolidate bookmarks from multiple computers. Once you click import/upload, follow the instructions.

top.pngStart Searching...

delicioussearch.jpgUse Delicious to search bookmarks saved by you, your network or all Delicious users. Unlike a Google-type search, the results are based on what people find interesting rather than semantics & statistics.
Combine tags to refine your search: combinetags.jpg

top.pngCreate a New Bookmark...

  1. When you find a web page you want to remember, click the ‘tag’ button on your toolbar:
  2. In the window that pops up, the url is entered automatically, as is any text you’ve highlighted. Type in the rest, including tags, which must be single-spaced (e.g. newyork or new_york, not new york).

  3. You can also choose from your own or others’ existing tags by clicking on them.
  4. Click ‘Save’ and you’re done!

top.pngAbout this Workshop

The web is loaded with ever-changing and growing resources for both teachers and learners. To make use of the web’s educational riches, educators need an efficient way to find and organize the content, tools and activities on the web best suited to their needs. Enter social bookmarking, which allows like-minded individuals to track, annotate, retrieve and share what they find useful on the web.
In this hands-on computer lab, learn efficient and creative web search strategies to explore a range of quality educational web sites suited to your professional interests and needs. Sign up for a social bookmarking account at www.delicious.com and learn how to bookmark, annotate and categorize your favorite sites, and access them from any computer at home, school or work. Any bookmark can be shared or private. Provide an optional description and add one or more ‘tags’ or key words to associate with that site. Tags can be any subject, location, name, features, tasks, people, ideas, etc. that you associate with the site, and are the key to organizing and retrieving sites bookmarked by you and others. Also learn to easily install and work with ‘bookmarklets’ and ‘plugins’ for your web browser to make searching and bookmarking more efficient.

To tap into the social aspects of Delicious, learn how to follow what others who share your passion(s) are linking to. Use Delicious to quickly find and create a network of reliable colleagues. Then view or search their bookmarks to quickly expand your collection of high quality resources on the web and hone in on the best of the web.
Discuss other social bookmarking services with different features and why social bookmarking can make you smarter and more efficient at using the web.

Advanced users in this workshop can also receive guidance on embedding bookmark ‘feeds’ into their own blogs, wikis or web sites to provide dynamically updated lists of links around specific topics. You'll leave this workshop with a personalized collection of organized, online links for educational topics, professional development and instructional activities, and the skills to continue building and using an effective, up-to-date collection of resources with the help of colleagues around the world.

top.pngWorkshop Goals...

  1. Tap into a high quality collection of educational web sites for educators and students.
  2. Learn effective web searching strategies to find even more sites to suit your needs.
  3. Learn how (and why) to use a social bookmarking service to organize, keep track of - and share - your favorite web sites for specific curricular areas, professional development, collaboration and learning.
In the process, you will create your own social bookmarking account on www.delicious.com, start finding and sharing links on the topics you care about and need, and learn how to follow what others who share your passion(s) are linking to. Advanced users in this session can also receive guidance on embedding Delicious bookmarks "feeds" into other web sites to provide dynamically updated lists of links around specific topics. You'll leave this workshop with a personalized collection of organized, online links for educational topics, news, professional development and instructional activities, and the skills to continue building and using an effective, up-to-date collection of resources.
